Houses of Empathy Anti-Bullying Programme

Welcome to the Houses of Empathy Anti-Bullying Programme!

Have you heard about this programme before? Do you know how it’s organised? Are you aware of the methodologies used?

Before embarking on the practice, we suggest you watch this video and find out more about our proposed intervention!

Team Building

Aims to promote cooperation and team work. The main goal is to work on peer cohesion and sense of belonging, making each youth understand the value each one brings to the home.

Unit 1 | Team Building

Let us introduce you to the first unit of this programme – Team Building.

This video will help you to understand the principles of this unit as well as the importance of working on team work with children and young people in residential care settings.

Besides that, you will find some tips and strategies to help you implement team building activities effectively with your group!

Remember, you can find this information in more detail in the Houses of Empathy handbook.

Communication

From verbal to non-verbal communication, the young people are expected to understand the importance of communication and what can influence this process in a positive or negative way. The main point is to train assertive communication strategies, making them understand the advantages this communication style brings to interpersonal relationships.

Unit 2 | Communication and Assertiveness - Introduction

The second unit of the programme aims to promote communication skills, in particular assertive communication.

This video is an introduction to the theme, its relevance and main concepts; verbal and nonverbal communication; communication barriers; and communication styles.

This will help you to understand the options and activities selected for the programme.

Unit 2 | Communication and Assertiveness - The Practice

Now that you know the concepts explored in the Unit “Communication and Assertiveness”, it´s time to discover how to address them!

This video illustrates the Houses of Empathy’s practical proposal and gives you some tips for facilitation and implementation.

One of the methods used in this unit is role-play. Do you know how to use role-play? This video is a good support for this kind of activity.

Problem Solving

Understand how to react towards a problem-situation is the starting point of this unit. The idea is, through the presentation of a set of challenges, help young people to develop skills of problem solving. The goal is that, gradually, each one could transfer these strategies for the problems they face in their daily life.

Unit 3 | Problem Solving

The challenge in the 3rd unit is to develop problem solving skills.

In this unit we present young people with practical challenges so they can experience and understand all the stages involved in solving a problem!

Through the activities they will experience identifying solutions, planning, consequences anticipation, coping with frustration, among others.

How can you do it? Find out more here!

Emotions

Recognition, understanding and managing feelings are essential for an  individual´s integrations and adjustment. In this unit, we focus on emotional expression, so that young people reflect on their own emotions and develop strategies do deal with them in their daily life.

Unit 4 | Emotions - Introduction

Knowing, Accepting and Dealing with emotions are the main goals of this unit.

We consider this to be one of the most demanding units; it requires a good understanding of the issues, in particular, the adaptive function each emotion plays.

This video is an introduction to this topic and answers the following questions:  Why are emotions important? Which emotions should be addressed? Why address emotions in this setting?

Unit 4 | Emotions - The Practice

We identified several strategies to experience and reflect on emotions. Joy, sadness, rage, fear and shame are just some of the emotions that we address in this unit.  Find out more  about our suggestions to work on each one!

Whether you opt for a longer or shorter approach, the important thing is that young people understand the importance of emotions and reflect on them in the home setting!

Self-Esteem

We believe that each person is Special and Unique. The challenge of this unit is to give each young person the opportunity to have his qualities recognised by the rest of his peers. Besides that, this unit also reflects on the impact we can have on others positively and negatively.

Unit 5 | Self-esteem

This unit promotes the idea that we’re all Special and Unique!

The Houses of Empathy proposal is to challenge young people to praise and be praised and understand the impact of their words and actions on each other.

Learn more about this approach;  there’s only space for positive contributions!

Empathy

It’s time we walked in another person shoes. Using role-play techniques, we´ll assist the group of peers to reflect on bullying in their homes and also on each person’s role in the group dynamic.

Unit 6 | Empathy - Introduction

This is the programme’s last unit, the Empathy Unit!

In this unit the concept of bullying is introduced to the group of children and young people.

This video is an introduction to this topic and clarifies the concept of bullying and empathy, and most of all, explains why we see empathy as the key to tackling bullying!

Unit 6 | Empathy - The Practice

Houses of Empathy’s practical proposal to address bullying includes helping young people reflect on their role in a bullying situation so that they understand that we’re all responsible in this kind of situation.

To achieve this we use the forum theatre technique! Forum theatre is proven to be an extremely rich tool to work on bullying and to explore alternative scenarios.

Watch this video to find out more about this tool and other strategies to combat bullying!

The House

Session by session, skill by skill our house is beginning to taking shape. The content and reflexion in each unit will result in an upgrade for the “House of Empathy”.

When completed the programme and the journey, the House will be built and full of empathy!

A House of Empathy - Programme Conclusion

At the end of the construction of the House of Empathy we challenge all professionals to spread an atmosphere of empathy throughout the house. It is important that a culture of empathy is present in all the relationships and  routines in the house.

So that everyone knows what is expected from them, we challenge the group to create their own code of empathy!

Do you want to know how to do it? What should it include? How can this activity be managed?

Take a look at this last video!

Thank you very much for joining us on this journey!
